Hope l’espoir
Vincent van Gogh. The Starry Night. 1889. Oil on canvas, 29 x 36 1/4″ (73.7 x 92.1 cm).
The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Acquired through the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest
When I saw “Starry Night” at MoMA exhibition in Berlin in 2004, I was standing in front of this piece for a while. Among the numerous paintings I encountered while staying in Europe, I think I stopped longest looking at these star lights.
Before I read “The Letters of Van Gogh”, I didn’t know how stronly he held on to hope. I only knew about his suicide, an extreme decision after all the despair, but didn’t know that he sincerely believed in the power of hope more than anyone else did.
I want to see his paintings again, whose canvases were filled with his trust in hope and life.

No person in front of Van Gogh paiting doesn’t feel a sort of shiver. I personally love “WheatField with Crows” ( http://www3.vangoghmuseum.nl/vgm/index.jsp?page=3343&lang=en ) also because it is probably his last work… I am sure you visited the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam but if you didn’t yet, please do. It deserves the trip and will stay in your eyes for ever.

Right, that’s what many people claim his last work and, because of this assumption, I can feel his suffering. I have visited Van Gogh’s museum a couple of times when I was in the Netherlands but I’ll try to visit there once again during the exhibition linked above in the brackets.

Dank je wel, Dick! I’ll definitely make it to see the exhibition next year. Of course, I will always want to visit the museum over and over. Tot ziens!
