There was a small bowl next to the fryer on the kitchen sink and I didn’t know what that was really for. I thought it might have been a water bowl for Mike, the rabbit my landlord raises, but as I saw he had a bigger bowl in his cage, I didn’t further think the purpose of the small bowl. Therefore, one day I used it to beat eggs for fried rice and the other day for scrambled eggs. A few days later, however, I came to know the real use of the small bowl and since then I’ve never used it for cooking.
Another story is about a cup. When I was having lunch on Sunday, my landlord saw me drinking juice in a cup and said, “What IS this? Are you drinking juice not in a glass but in a cup?” Then, he continued cups are for drinking only milk or tea and juice should be served in a glass. As I told him I didn’t really care about that, he said for joking that from tomorrow he’d serve my food with plastic dishes and I said he surely could do so. I’m not sure whether his rule came from his French origin or from a general European custom, but I’m going to follow his when he’s within the visible distance from me.

Dick:
Aahh I guess he is right, a cup is good for tea, hot milk and coffe of course. Juice should be in a glass. How was your meal using plastic dishes???/

Oh, another point of view from a European… then I should stick to it.
He didn’t serve the food in plastic dishes. He was just joking. But, I would have minded having my meal in plastic dishes because it’s proved that the plastic food container creates chemical contamination.

But aren’t you using a mug??? What’s the rule for mugs??? For me a cup is like what you have in high tea. Those for coffee and tea but it comes with the saucer.
15 October 2008, 8:43 amIn US, we use mugs for everything. Was your landlord annoyed?
Sunkyoung:
Oh, mug! Yes, the blue container on the picture is ‘mug’, in which we can pour juice too! I wrote ‘mug (머그컵)’ in the Korean paragraph. He wasn’t annoyed at all. He just teased me.
