[...] The series of experiences in Bangkok in June left me a kind of trauma, and I was afraid that this incident would be an unlucky omen for my trip to Vietnam. But, eventually, I didn’t have any bad experiences in Vietnam and was even lucky to avoid the Typhoon Ketsana that hit the central Vietnam hard only one week after I left the area.

Dalicia - Thanks for your comments. Ca va? I don't remember if I saw a tourism office there but he was wearing a well-ironed uniform (pale blue shirt and pants on the first day and white shirt and black pants the next day, and a black cap). Next time I want to visit other cities and towns in Thailand.

I don't recommend any visitors to take tuk-tuk. That's what we call it the RIDE of your life. Sorry to hear your experience. I'm pretty sure you understand the situation in Thailand at the moment. Things are very messy in the country. The security guard, if you can describe what he's wearing. He's likely to be a tourism police. If I remember correctly, there should be a tourism office around Wat Palace.

Eli - Thanks for your comment. You probably remember I tweeted about this day while I was in Thailand. It's true that often the beautiful places have some ugly sites but we shouldn't let them us totally down. 'You deserve all that's lovely!' that is!!

Aw, Sunkyoung... that's a rough day.

I think they happen to everybody, but that's hardly a consolation when you're in the middle of one! M and I had a horrible day once in Greece (which is really a lovely, friendly country!). We were scammed out of a ferry ride to Rhodes, then had to lose a precious day of travel, then finally got a spot on an overnight ferry with NO proper facilities and no place to sleep (we ended up curling up in the freezing cold air out on the wood deck)...just awful. Actually, that same trip had another bad day in the middle of Turkey (another scam, but this time we were kicked off a bus in the middle of the Turkish countryside with no money and no phone).

No matter those bad days and mean scammers, we went on to have lovely vacations and meet even lovelier people in Greece and Turkey. :) I hope that same goes for you. You deserve all that's lovely!

Mitchy - Thanks, it took me a while to overcome the shock and hurt. Your last sentence, that's the lesson I learned from this experiene. It is a little sad now I will (un)intentionally keep my distance from locals but, as travelling more, I only hope to be able to discern between true good wills and evil tricks they offer.

Wow Sunkyoung, I'm so sorry you had to go through all of this! I will keep in mind your advice if I find myself there! I have gone along with some of the crazy suggestions in Jinan, China, but became more trusting when I was never cheated by the locals in that way. I should remember that there are many places in the world that are more skilled at taking advantage of visiting tourists!
