My aunt who runs a nursery told me a very funny story about a boy who’s afraid of blue eyes. Among children she looks after, there is a naughty boy and especially this boy often sneakily opens a cupboard and steal a handful of cereals or snacks when he’s not allowed to. My aunt guided him several times but it didn’t work.

However, when a couple of day care centres in the neighbourhood gathered, she found a weakness of this boy she could play on. My aunt’s boy suddenly stopped when he found a white boy with blue eyes from another nursery and he was quiet all through the day.

Perceiving this unexpected situation, my aunt placed a baby doll with blue eyes inside the cupboard. Guess what happened? This boy with blue-eye phobia got frozen when he opened the door and stayed away from the space. However, my aunt’s idea didn’t enjoy its triumph for so long as the boy came back with an unexpected idea – a few days later, when my aunt and other teachers didn’t pay attention to him, he dugged up the fake eyes of the baby doll and finally made it to grab his snacks again! It became my aunt’s job to glue the eyes back to the doll.

This boy who had become triumphant now made a bolder attempt. When he encountered the white boy, the inital cause of fear, he was about to hold out his fingers to reach the white boy’s eyes and my aunt had to keep him from causing a real problem.

어린이집을 운영하고 계신 우리 고모로부터 들은 ‘파란 눈을 두려워 한 아이’에 대한 재미있는 이야기가 있어 소개코자 한다. 고모네 어린이집에 말 안 듣는 남자 아이가 하나 있는데, 찬장에 둔 씨리얼과 과자를 아무 때나 몰래 먹는다는 것이었다. 몇 번 주의를 줬는데도 말을 듣지 않아 고심하던 차에 우리 고모는 어느 날 우연한 사건을 통해 이 버릇을 멈출 묘책을 발견하게 되었다.

인근의 몇몇 어린이집이 모인 때가 있었는데, 한 어린이집에 파란 눈을 가진 백인 아기가 있었다는 것이다. 이 아기를 본 순간 고모네 집 아이는 갑자기 겁을 먹고 하루 종일 조용했다는 것이다. 이를 관찰한 고모는 어린이 집에 있는 눈 깜박이는 인형을 찬장 안에 두었는데, 벽목(碧目)공포증을 가진 아이는 예상대로 문을 열자 깜짝 놀라 한 동안에 찬장 근처에도 가지 않았다는 것이었다. 하지만 고모의 승리는 오래 가지 않았다. 며칠 후 고모를 포함해 다른 선생님들도 한 눈을 판 사이 이 아이는 찬장의 인형을 꺼내어 모조 눈을 다 파내고 다시 과자를 꺼내 먹었다는 것이다! 우리 고모에게는 인형 눈을 도로 붙여야 하는 일이 생겨버렸다.

의기양양해진 이 아이는 이제 더 대담한 행동을 시도했다고 한다. 예의 그 백인아이와 다시 마주친 일이 있었을 때 손가락을 뻗쳐 아이의 눈에 닿으려고 해서 우리 고모가 제지해야 했다고 한다.
