오, 그러나 왠걸? 의외의 반응이 돌아왔다. 제일 먼저 답장을 보낸 park양은 메일 첫 줄 가득 웃음을 내뿜으며 최근에 이렇게 큰 소리로 웃어본 건 처음이라 하여 내 근심을 덜어주었다. 이어서 돌아오는 답장에도 다들 긍정적인 반응이었다. 너 답다, 너 때문에 내가 미친다, 간단명료해서 좋다 등등. 그리고 무엇보다 황송한 그리고 가장 압도적인 반응은 “(이 바쁜 일정에) 나를 끼워줘서 고맙다”는 거였다.

지난 한 주 반동안 몇 건의 조정을 거쳐 최종 일정이 아래와 같이 나왔다.

이미 몇 차례 이런 강행군 스케줄을 진행한 적이 있어서 이번에는 하루나 이틀 정도 특정 시간 및 장소를 잡아 되는 사람들을 되도록이면 한꺼번에 보고자 했으나, 그런 방식은 아직까지 우리 정서에 맞지 않다는 은지양의 의견을 고려한데다 여러 여건 상 몰아서 보기 어려운 사람들이 많아 또 다시 개별적으로 만나는 일정을 잡았다. 하지만 이런 무리한 일정은 이번을 마지막으로 해야겠다는 생각이 든다. 무엇보다 이제는 체력이 안 될 것 같다.;;

그 와중에 미리양이 아이디어를 냈다. 내가 하루 종일 한 장소에 있고 점심-오후-저녁 별로 제각기 다른 사람들이 개인으로든 그룹으로든 왔다가 가면 되지 않느냐는 거였다. 아주 괜찮은 생각이긴 한데 두 가지 맹점이 있다. 나는 계속 같은 장소에 있어야 하므로 음식이 종류별로 골고루 있고 하루나 이틀 정도 같은 주방에서 나오는 음식이어도 질리지 않을 만큼 맛있어야 한다는 것. 그리고 더 큰 문제는 일 년에 잘 해야 한 번 가는데, 식당 한 구석을 하루 종일 차지해도 문제가 되지 않는 단골이 어떻게 되느냐는 것이다. 물론 매상만 잘 올려준다면 이건 의외로 쉽게 해결될 수도 있겠지만. 이 문제는 다음에도 해외 체류 중 한국을 가게 되면 그 때 걱정하련다. 지금은 3일 후면 한국에 있게 된다는 것이 가장 중요하다.

추신: 이번에 미리 연락을 못 한 친구들 (특히 이 곳에 와서 흔적 남기는 이들)에게는 미안하기 그지 없다. 은지 말마따나 못 보는 사람도 만나는 사람만큼은 된다는…

When I learned last month that there would be 20th anniversary concert of my favourite Korean singer in December, my heart already broke into pieces. However, just now after finding out a few more to come, those pieces of my broken heart have turned to ashes.
지난 달에 내가 제일 좋아하는 한국 가수인 이승환의 20주년 기념 콘서트가 12월에 있을 거란 소식을 들었을 때 내 가슴은 이미 무너졌다. 그러나 다른 콘서트 소식을 추가로 들은 지금, 그 무너진 가슴은 한 번 더 폭탄을 맞았다.

 
It’s because two groups that I love so much are also going to have gigs in Seoul in December: Earth, Wind & Fire from USA, and D’Sound from Norway! Especially, the former really is the classic of groove and disco, and it will be their first-ever visit to Korea. And with D’Sound, I missed them last year and going to miss them again this year.그건 바로 어쓰, 윈드 앤 파이어와 디사운드가 서울에 오기 때문이다. 특히, 전자의 그룹은 그루브와 디스코에 있어 고전이 된 그룹이고 이번이 최초 방한이다. 그리고 디사운드는 작년에 이어 올해에도 놓치게 되었다.

I should have had thought about this well in advance that there are always lots of concerts in Seoul around the time of year-end, and scheduled my visit to Korea in December instead of next February. However, because of this confirmed visit early next year, it will be difficult to plan another trip to Korea in December 2010. Ahhh… what a dilemma!
연말에 서울에서 열리는 공연이 많다는 것을 일찌감치 염두에 두고 내년 2월 대신 12월 한국 방문을 계획했어야 했다. 하지만 이미 확정된 2월 휴가 때문에 내년 12월에 한국을 한 번 더 가는 것은 어려울 것이다. 아아아… 이거 완전 곤란하다!

한국에 있었다면 친구들과 만나 고인을 기리며 건배를 했을 것 같다. 험난했던 인생, 이제는 접고 편안히 가시라고. 그리고 이런 이야기를 나누겠지. 1994년 김일성이 사망했을 때, 200년 김대중 전 대통령이 방북하여 김정일을 만났을 때, 각각 어디서 뭘 하고 있었는지. 첫 번째 사건 때, 나는 친구들과 생일을 맞은 한 친구네 집에서 밥을 먹은 후 노래방으로 가기 직전이었다. 두 번째 사건 때에는 당시 남자 친구와 학교 앞 고기 뷔페에서 고기를 굽고 있었다. 그 때 그 친구가 TV 보면서 눈물이 날 것 같다고 한 것이 기억난다.

이제 한국의 진보계는 정말로 새로운 지도자를 찾아야 할 것이다. 그리고 그 사람으로 인해 집결될 힘을 모아야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 대한민국은 언젠가는 곧 폭발하리라 생각한다. 그리고 그 피해는 고스란히 서민들에게 갈 것이고.

How extraordinary it is to lose two former presidents in a row in one year. Even both of them were symbolic figures who strove for democracy…

If I were in Korea, I would meet my friends and drink a toast to the memories of the previous president. To his life full of ordeals, of which he can now finish the last page and take a long rest in peace. And we would talk about what were doing respectively in 1994 when Kim Il-seong died and in 2000, when this former president Kim visited North Korea to meet Kim Jeong-il. For the first case, I was with a group of friends at a friend’s house to celebrate her birthday. We just had lunch prepared by her mother and were about to go out for noraebang (‘karaoke’ in Korean). When the second event took place, I was grilling some meat with my then-boyfriend at a ‘meat buffet’ near from the campus. I remember him having said that he felt like crying watching TV.

Now Korea’s progressive society really does need to have a leader. And they have to gather support through his or her leadership. Otherwise, I think Korea will explode someday soon. And it is going to be ordinary people who will be harmed by these damages.

트랜스포머 1을 보지 않고 2탄을 먼저 보았는데 거리에 붙은 포스터나 예고편을 봤을 때에는 모든 로보트가 ‘그들’ – 즉, 나쁜편이라 생각했다. 그런데 몇몇 로보트들은 군공무원이더만.
I didn’t have a chance to see Transformers 1 while it was on screen, and from posters and a trailer of TF2, I had thought all the robots were ‘them’ – that is, evils. However, some robots were even military civil servants.

헐리우드에서 만든 거의 모든 외계 세력/생물체/현상의 지구 박살내기 영화에서는 무조건 미국이 사태를 다 처리한다.  이 영화에서도 상해와 빠리가 쑥대밭이 되는데도 결국 머리 싸매고 고민하는 곳은 미군 사령실이나 펜타곤이다. 중국이나 프랑스도 왠만한 군사강국 아닌가? 미국영화니까 미군 나오는 게 당연할 수도 있지만 연합군도 못 꾸린단 말인가? 오히려 그게 더 자연스러운 것 아닌가?
In most of the Hollywood movies where the external forces/lives/phenomena strike the Earth, it is always the USA who mainly deals with them. In TF2, Shanghai and Paris were blown up, but it was the US military commander’s room and Pentago where people gathered to solve the situation. Aren’t China and France also such military powers? One could argue it’s fair to show these core decision-making bodies in the US as TF2 is an American film. But, I can’t help but ask, even in that case, why the US military doesn’t arrange the coalition forces with China and France. Isn’t this more realistic?

마이클 베이 감독의 작품에는 군대 및 그들의 장비를 근사하게 그리는 장면이 자주 등장한다. 한 친구의 retweet을 통해 보게 된 Transformers FAQs라는 웹페이지에서는 이 감독이 원래 제트기, 탱크, 항공모함에 환장해서(Because Michael Bay has a huge erection for jets and tanks and aircraft carriers [...]) 그렇다고도 하는데, 이걸 읽고 떠오른 사람이 있었다.

At a web page, Transformers FAQs, which I came to read through a friend of mine’s retweet, it is explained that he ‘has a huge erection for jets and tanks and aircraft carriers [...]‘ Reading this phrase, I recalled one person.

그는 바로 2003년에 ‘비상‘이라는 책의 서평이 신문에 나서 알게 된 ‘이원익’이라는 사람이다. 이 책은, 그가 2001년 빠리국제에어쇼에 참가하여 항공선진국들의 첨단 기술 및 그들의 영향력에 자극을 받은 후 세계적 한공산업의 에이전트가 되기 위해 하버드 케네디 행정대학에 입학하기 직전에 낸 자서전이다.
It is Wonik Lee, whom I came to know through a newspaper’s book review of his autobiography in 2003. The book was published right before he went to John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (hereafter, HKS: Harvard Kennedy School). He applied for this school to build his career as an agent in the aerospace industry after he was stimulated by what he saw at Paris Airshow 2001 – high technologies of advanced countries in the industry and their power.

In addition to that he went to study abroad in the similar time as me, I was looking forward to his future path so I have searched some news whenever he called to mind. The latest news I’ve found is that, after he completed 2-year master course, he was working at aircraft export team of Korean Aerospace Industries, Ltd. In a word, he was selling training aircraft. 이원익은 전투기 조종사인 부친을 둔 덕에 일찌기 어려서부터 전투기에 관심이 많았고 스스로도 전투기 조종사가 되고자 하였다. 그러나 고등학교 때 시력저하로 인해 공군사관학교 진학을 포기해야 했다. 하지만 관심과 열정을 멈추지 않아 전문가 수준에 가까운 지식을 쌓았고 여러 사회 활동을 통해 다방면의 실력도 키웠다.
Thanks to his father, combat pilot, he got interested in jet fighters at his very early age and he wanted to become a fighter pilot himself. However, because of a decline in his eye sight during his high school time, he had to give up going to the national air-force academy. Despite this, his high interest and passion led him to acquire as much knowledge as the professional’s and he also built his capacity through experiences in various fields.

자신의 꿈을 이루기 위해 굉장한 노력을 기울였다는 점에서는 그에게 아낌없는 박수를 보낸다. 하지만 그의 꿈을 이루는 과정에서 얽혀진 여러 관계들은 그의 행보를 마냥 칭송하게 만은 만들지 않는다. 케네디 행정대학의 학비와 생활비의 대부분은 삼성 이건희장학재단에 선발되어 벌었고, 그가 역할모델로 삼은 홍정욱은 한나라당 소속으로 국회의원이 되었고, 유학 직전 결혼한 상대의 부친은 진대제 전 정보통신부 장관이다.
In view of that he has put enormous efforts to make his dreams come true, I give him applause. However, several relations he’s got connected to on his path towards his dreams, do not make me only applaud him. 그가 개인적으로 일궈낸 성과 및 쌓은 인맥을 비판하고자 하는 것은 아니지만 그의 선택이 우연히, 혹은 의도적으로(!) 사회의 보수세력과 밀접히 연관을 맺게 된 것에 나는 주목을 하고 있다. 그리고 그가 케네디스쿨에서 공부한 뒤 하고 있는 일이 살인과 관련된 전쟁무기(당시에는 훈련기였다 할지라도) 수출이라는 점도.
I do not intend to criticise his personal achievements and human relationships, but I do pay attention to the fact that he has built those relations with a broad conservative segment of society by chance, or on purpose(!). My attention also goes to what he is doing after graduation from HKS is exporting arms – though they were training jets at that time -, that could cause civilian casualties.

내가 항공 및 군수 산업에는 문외한이라 그 안에 얽힌 국가 간, 지역 간 역학 관계를 무시한 것일 수도 있다. (사실 그 검은 세계를 알고 싶은 생각도 별로 없다.) 하지만 그가 케네디스쿨에서 배운 것에 그만의 영특함과 근면, 성실함을 더하여 인류를 위해 보다 인도적인 차원의 일을 했으면 좋았겠다는 안타까움이 크다. (어쩌면 내가 케네디스쿨에 대한 일면만 알고 있는지도…)
As an absolute outsider of aerospace and munitions industries, I may be ignorant about the politics entangled between countries and regions in these fields. (Actually I’m not really interested in this dark side of the world.) But what I regret is that he could have done a work of rather humanitarian dimension for mankind with his intelligence and diligence as well as things he learned at HKS. (Maybe I only know one aspect of the school…)

자, 결론이다. 글 제목에 대한 변이자 왜 트랜스포머 2 보고 나서 이 사람 생각이 났는지에 대한 답변. 부친의 직업의 영향 외에도 이원익의 진로에 결정적인 영향을 미친 영화가 ‘탑건’이었다.
Here is my conclusion. This explains a reason for the title of this post and why I recalled him after watching Transformers 2. Besides his father’s job, it was a movie, ‘Top Gun’ that had a decisive influence on his life.

When we say that someone is strong,
he or she may not be strong in fact
but it is only that we want them to be strong.

When they did not come up to our expectations, which we had of them as the others,
can we call them a weak person?

Watching a person leave,
who had to be strong rather than being strong himself,
today I cried my first tears for him.

Crossing the river twice, the total distance by public transport was about 37 km and I walked almost 5 km. It was such a long day indeed.

In 2007 & 2008, as a member of the Irish Association of Korea (IAK), I was involved in organising the city-wide St. Patrick’s Day Festival. For the past two years we achieved a huge success, especially attracting 18,000 participants and spectators in the middle of capital with population of over ten million.
2007년과 2008년, 나는 한국아일랜드협회의 멤버로 세인트 패트릭스 데이 페스티벌 운영에 참가했었었다. 지난 2년 동안 우리는 큰 성공을 거뒀는데, 특히 작년에는 인구 천만명 도시 서울의 청계천에서 18,000 여명의 참가자와 관객들을 이끌었다.

Due to the economic turmoil, a worry over maintaining the festival had loomed but in the end even crisis couldn’t stop us (today’s press release on JoongAng Daily)! The 9th St. Patrick’s Day Festival in Seoul will be held at Daehangno on Sat. 14 March with lots of events consisting of a parade, music bands, ceili dancing and ‘hooley’. 경제 침체 때문에 축제를 계속 이어나갈 수 있을 지 걱정이 많았는데 결국에는 경제 위기도 우리를 멈추게 할 수는 없었다 (오늘 자 중앙데일리 보도문). 올해로 9번째를 맞는 세인트 페트릭스 데이 행사가 이번에는 14일 토요일 대학로에서 펼쳐지게 되었다. 퍼레이드, 밴드 공연, 아이리쉬 댄싱 그리고 뒤풀이 축제인 ‘훌리 (hooley)’가 마련되어 있으니 자세한 사항은 IAK의 홈페이지를 참고하시길.

이번 주말 IAK 친구들이 많이 보고 싶을 거다. 하지만 초록빛 정신만큼은 간직하마. 친구들아, 잘 될거야!

As we grow up, it becomes obvious that there’s no such thing as the numerical relationship between the numbers of ddeokguk soup and one’s age. However, we all exchange greetings for New Year, besides ‘새해 복 많이 받으세요 (saehae bongmani baduseyo: wish you lots of luck in New Year)’, “have you eaten ddeokguk?” If someone ever doesn’t make it to have this dish, it immediately evokes the other person’s sympathy. As most people go home for New Year holidays, though, it’s very rare for us to miss the chance of eating ddeokguk. However, on one’s birthday when we (should) eat ‘미역국 (miyeokguk: seaplant soup)’, this Q&A session quite often ends up with answer ‘no’ and thus brings enormous sympathy especially to people who don’t live with their parents.

If I were not invited to a New Year party today hosted by a couple of Korean people here in Brussels, I wouldn’t have tried to make ddeokguk myself. Although I hadn’t given much meaning to having to eat ddeokguk, I’ve realised what it actually means. When I talked to my parents earlier this morning that I was going to have ddeokguk thanks to this invitation, they were so glad to hear this because they were concerned about me for not having the soup. Wherever I will be in the future, I’ll try to make ddeokguk for New Year, not only to ease my parents’ worries but to think about the meanings of family, home, love, and more importantly to share these meanings with people around me.

정말이지 한국에 있을 때에는 “크리스마스 = 가족 행사”라는 개념이 아니어서 그 느낌을 잘 몰랐는데, 여기서는 모든 사람들이 크리스마스는 가족과 함께 보내고 그 때문에 선물을 사고 계획을 짜고 준비를 하는 것을 보니 가족들이 다른 때보다 더 많이 생각이 나게 되었다. 한국에서 우리가 설이나 추석을 앞두고 왁자지끌해질 때 주한외국인들이 느끼는 심정이 아마 지금 내 기분 같겠다라는 짐작을 해본다.
Indeed, when I was in Korea, as we don’t have a conception of “Christmas = Family Event”, I didn’t have a strong attachment to Christmas. However, being here (in Brussels, more generally Europe), where everyone spends a Christmas time with their family and therefore buys Christmas gifts, plans and prepares for the festival, I’ve become to miss my family more than ever. I assume that expatriates living in Korea would feel the way I do now when the whole country is full of all the hustle and bustle before New Year’s Day and Full Moon Day both in lunar calendar.

Wooyo & Youngja were greeting at the entrance the audience to the opening concert, wearing ‘hanbok’ – Korean traditional costume. Including this couple, many of Korean wives and their children volunteered for this job.

 

국립관현악단의 개막 공연 직전. 이 날 관객 중 상당수는 나처럼 초대권으로 온 것이기는 했지만 유료 관객도 꽤 있었다고 한다. Right before the opening concert by the National Orchestra of Korea. This day most of the audience had invitation tickets like me but I heard there were also many people who bought the tickets.

통역으로 참가한 단소 워크샵. 어린 아이부터 어른까지 굉장한 열의와 관심을 갖고 배우려는 모습에 깊은 인상을 받았다.
Danso (短簫)’, small/ short flute, workshop where I volunteered as an interpreter. I was really impressed at the audience from children to adults who were highly enthusiastic and interested in learning the instrument.
