벨기에 대사관으로 가는 골목에 들어서면 오른쪽에 흰색 외관의 작은 케잌집이 있다. 이름도 귀여운 ‘Life is just a cup of cake.’ 가격은 3,800~4,500원 대여서 약간 비싼 편이지만, 속이 아주 촉촉하고 위에 얹힌 다양한 크림 맛이 진하다.

If you enter the alley to get to the Belgian Embassy, there is a small cake cafe with the white facade on the right side. The prices range around 3,800 to 4,500 KRW, which are a little expensive. However, the inside of each cake is really moist and the various types of topped cream are so rich.

If you buy more than 2 cup cakes to go, you get them in a box.

Note: 친구와 앉아서 이야기 할 곳을 찾다가 해밀턴 호텔 뒷 골목에서 불가리아 레스토랑을 발견했다. 바로 그 옆에는 ‘미뇽’이라는 벨기에/프랑스 식당 메뉴판도 있었다 (세로로 된 검정, 노랑, 빨강 배열은 벨기에 국기를 나타낸다). 이태원은 정말로 세계 곳곳의 음식을 맛볼 수 있는 곳이 되어가고 있다.

While searching for a place to sit and talk with a friend of mine, we encounted a Bulgarian restaurant in the alley behind Hamilton Hotel. Right next the restaurant’s menu, there was also ‘Mignon’, a Belgian/French restaurant’s menu, representing the Belgian flag. Itaewon, a foreign quarter in Seoul, is truly becoming a place of cuisine from all over the world.

산이 많은 강원도는 감자로 유명한데 그 중에서도 옹심이를 나는 최고의 음식으로 친다. 이 블로그의 이름도 바로 이 옹심이에서 따온 것이다. 아래 사진은 속초의 ‘황가네 손칼국수’의 옹심이인데, 국내외로 그 맛의 뛰어남을 인정받았다.
Kangwon-do, where there are lots of mountains, is famous for its potatoes and the best potato cuisine for me is ‘ongshimi’. The domain name of this blog is also named after this food. The photo below is ongshimi at ‘The Hwang’s Hand-made noodles’ in Sokcho, and their ongshimi has been praised both internally and externally.
 

이제 당분간은 옹심이를 먹기가 어려워질 것이므로 휴일을 맞아 이번 기회에 엄마로부터 옹심이 만드는 법을 배웠다.
As I won’t be able to have ongshimi for the time being, during the holiday, I learned from my mom how to make ongshimi.

1. 갈은 감자를 망에 넣고 물에 헹군다. 헹군 물은 따로 모아둔다.
Put ground potatoes in a net and rinse them with water. Pour the water in a basket.

2. 여러번 헹군 후 뽀얀 물이 거의 나오지 않게 되면 헹구는 것을 멈추고, 망 안의 감자를 꺼내어 꼭 짜서 나머지 물기를 없앤다.
Rinse them several times until there’s almost no more white water from the potatoes. Then take out the potatoes and squeeze them dry once again.

3. 넓은 찜통을 준비하여 Prepare a big steam pot
4. 감자 갈은 것을 거의 익을 때까지 찌면 위와 같이 된다. Steam the potatoes until they get almost cooked.

5. 1번에서 모아놨던 물을 따라내면 바닥에 녹말만 남게 되는데 여기에 녹말가루를 넣는다.
    Draw off the water in no. 1 and there’s starch left in the base of the basket. Put some starch powder in it.
6. 5번에 찐 감자 덩어리와 소금을 약간 넣고 반죽을 한다. Place in no. 5 the steam potatoes and a little salt, and make dough.

Note: 똑같은 반죽으로 감자떡도 만들 수 있다. 감자 속에는 강낭콩(물에 살짝 익힌 후 식용유와 설탕을 넣어 졸인다)이나 밤을 넣을 수 있다.
With the same dough, you can make potato ‘deok’ (sticky rice cake, and in this case, potatoes replace rice) and, inside the dough, you can put red beans (boil in the water first and boil down in oil and sugar) or chestnuts.

7. 옹심이 국물을 만들기 위해 반죽과 채썰기한 호박을 준비한다.
    To make soup for ongshimi, prepare the dough and sliced courgettes.

8. 감자 반죽을 넣기 전에 말린 미역과 버섯, 호박을 넣고 끓이며 간장으로 간을 한다.
    Before putting the potato dough, boil in water dried seaweed and mushroom, and courgettes. Season with soybean sauce.

9. 감자 반죽은 차숟가락 크기 정도로 떼어낸다. Make teaspoon-sized dough pieces.

10. 반죽이 완전히 익을 때까지 끓인다. Boil all the ingredients until fully cooked.

완성된 옹심이와 감자떡. Voila!

강원도 간성의 작은 사찰에서 광복절 휴일을 보내며 찍은 사진을 공개한다.
I’d like to post some photos taken in a small temple in Kanseong, Kangwon-do where I spent Independence Day holiday.

개량 한복과 흰 고무신이 나에게 이리도 잘 어울릴 줄이야. 내 친구 루시는 내가 마치 절간의 초동(樵豎) 같다고 했다.
I didn’t expect the simplified Korean traditional clothes (‘hanbok’) and white rubber shoes would look so perfect on me. My friend, Lucy, even told me I looked like a temple’s dweller, ‘wood-boy’.

절 바로 뒤로는 산이 있고 앞으로는 계곡이 흐른다.
The temple have mountains right behind it and a valley in front of the place.

뒷짐 지고 걷기에는 아직은 젊다. / I know I’m still young to walk putting my hands on my back.

이번 여행의 좋은 동반자가 되어 준 루시. / Lucy, who was a good companion to my trip.

 
Another cafe I found recently is cafe aA in Hong-ik University area, so-called Hongdae. As seen on the sign over the entrance, the place looks like a big gallery. I must have used to pass this alley several time, but as I only went to places I knew, I’d never have found this cafe without a friend of mine.

최근에 발견한 또 다른 까페는 홍대 앞에 있는 cafe aA라는 곳이다. 입구에서 볼 수 있듯이 이 곳은 큰 갤러리처럼 생겼다. 분명히 이 쪽 골목을 여러 번 지나갔을 텐데, 가는 곳만 가다 보니 친구가 아니였으면 이 곳을 절대 몰랐을 것이다.

There is a place on the 1.5 floor where you can plug in your laptop, but strangely only Siamese twin seats are available, which are stuck together and also onto the ground. I did see two guys, before taking this photo, sitting side by side and talking while looking into a laptop in front of them.

1.5층에는 랩탑을 꽂을 수 있는 플러그가 설치된 곳이 있는데, 이상하게도 샴쌍둥이처럼 생긴 의자만 있고 이 의자는 나란히 뿐만 아니라 바닥에도 고정이 되어 있다. 이 사진을 찍기 전에는 랩탑을 쳐다보며 나란히 앉아 이야기를 나누는 두 남자를 보았다.

커피를 마시지 않는 나는 맛있는 커피 맛을 찾아 헤맬 필요는 없지만 별다방이나 콩다방 같은 커피전문점은 좋아하지 않으므로 장소를 고를 때 나름 고심을 한다. 은지가 친구의 소개로 알게 된 까페서랍에 데려갔을 때 사람 많은 대학로에서 비교적 한산한 곳을 알게 되어 반가웠다.

As I don’t drink coffee, I don’t need to look for great coffee taste. But, because of my distaste for Starbucks and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, I sort of have to make some efforts when looking for a place. When Eunji took me to Cafe Seorab that she came to know through a friend of hers, I was glad to know this cafe, which is relatively quiet in all-the-time crowded Daehangno.

뮤지컬을 좋아하는 주인이 뮤지컬 음악을 계속 틀어주고 관련 책자들도 곳곳에 놓여있다. 음료 맛과 가격은 나쁘지 않다.
The musical-lover owner keeps playing musical sound tracks and there are also a number of musical books and magazines. Tastes and prices are not too bad.

As you can see on my twitter on the right side bar of this blog, I watched ‘The Good, The Bad, and The Weird‘ yesterday, which has ranked #1 in box office here in Korea. The idea of seeing this film came from S whose boyfriend also wanted to watch it because he learned from a local English newspaper that Yongsan CGV offers an English subtitle exclusively for the film. (I guess this aims at promoting the film widely to a lot of foreign residents in town and the location, Yongsan, where there is a US Army Base, makes sense to be chosen for this unusual occasion.)

Since there was a long queue at the box office, we instead decided to get the tickets by ourselves by using the ticket machine. Above the machines, there were the big signs promoting ‘English Subtitle’ on the billboard as well as on the screen and this note was attched on to every machine. Finding this interesting, I took some pictures of the cinema as below. (For bigger pictures, please go to my Flickr site.)

When the movie started, however, we were stunned that it didn’t show any subtitle! As it was an action movie, it didn’t require high Korean proficiency for E who understands the language. But, still, it was very disappointing to us that Yongsan CGV didn’t do properly to inform the audience of the separate schedule for the English subtitle which I believe should have been posted near from the machines.

While S was heading to the toilet, I went back to the machines and confirmed that there was no time schedule around the machines but found the leaflets of time table at the opposite side from the machines. We could have checked the time table before approaching them, but it is also true that, given no additional information about the different screening schedule displayed very close to the machines, we simply were not provided with full information.

며칠 전에 네이버에서 검색을 하다가 웃긴 광고를 하나 보았다.
한게임에서 새로 만든 온라인 게임인 것 같았는데 연세대와 고려대가 대결을 하는 설정이었다.

예전에 누군가가 이런 말을 한 적이 있었다.
바티칸에서 우리 나라를 보고서 정말 신기해 한 것이 기독교와 불교가 거의 비슷한 비율의 신도를 갖고 있는데,
종교 전쟁이 일어나지 않은 점이 놀랍다는 것이었다.
하지만 달리 생각해보니 우리는 종교 말고도 서로 대결할 것이 많아서 종교전쟁이 일어나지 않는 것 같다.
두 사립대가 온라인 게임에서까지 전쟁을 하고 있으니 말이다.

Yonsei and Korea are private universities in Korea, which have long history of rivalry. The other day on a portal site I found the advertisement of an online game whose plot is a war between the two universities, and I found it to be hilarious.

I remember someone said one thing the Vatican found amazed by Korea was that, despite the almost similar ratio of believers for Christianity and Buddhism, Korea has not experienced a religious war. Now I think, however, the reason for the almost complete lack of religious wars would be due to the fact that we have many other things, besides different religions, to fight against each other for. It becomes more clear looking at these two private universities engaged in war even in this online game.

조금 비싸기는 하지만 제대로 된 빵에 싱싱한 재료를 넣은 샌드위치를 먹고 싶다면 ‘오봉빵’으로 가자.

Though the prices are a little expensive, if you want to have a sandwich with genuine bread and fresh ingredients, treat yourself at ‘au bon pain’.
