요는 경기도의 한 지역에서 한국 남성과 결혼한 해외 여성들을 대상으로 요리 교실을 연다는 것이었다.
그러면서 “한국어 만큼이나 어려운” 한국 음식 만들기에 열심인 여성들이 기특하다는 투로 비추었다.

이 여성들은 전날 과음을 한 시아버지의 속을 달래줄 해장국 만들 생각에 정성을 다 쏟는데,
과연 그녀들의 가족은 그들의 고국 음식을 받아들이는 데에 얼마나 마음을 여는지 궁금해졌다.
음식은 동질감과 이질감을 단 번에 느끼게 해주는 아주 간단한 매개체인데
그들이 서로의 음식을 통해 상대방의 문화를 더 잘 이해할 수 있으면 좋겠다.

If you let YTN, 24-hour news channel, on TV, you can often watch the same news before sleeping and after getting up. And among the news reported on the channel last night and this morning, there was one I wanted to talk here as it keeps echoing in my mind.

The story was about a cooking class in a village of Northern Kyonggido for immigrants women who married to Korean men. Then it went on saying in a tone of praising their attempts to learn Korean cooking which is “as difficult as Korean language”.

I was wondering that, compared to these women who do elaborate work to make for their fathers-in-law a broth to chase a hangover from their heavy drinking the night before, how much open-minded their (Korean) families are to the food from the women’s home countries. As food is a simple object of homogeneity and heterogeneity, I hope they can better understand each other through their food.

맹목적인 민족주의로 가득 찬 폭력을 휘두르는 일부 중국 젊은이들 때문에,
정체 불명의 외국인 남자 친구와의 교제 사실을 알린 딸 때문에 절망에 빠지셨다는 친구의 부모님 때문에,
서로 국적이 다른 부부 사이에서 태어난 아이의 정체성은 누가 책임질 거냐고 헛소리하던 커플 때문에,
그리고 어제 일시적으로 내 몸에 닥친 고통 때문에.

개뿔의 민족주의 같으니라구…

I felt quite sick yesterday

because of some Chinese young people who used violence full of reckless nationalism,
because of a friend of mine’s parents who’ve got despaired of their daughter who told them about her relationship with an unidentified foreign guy,
because of a couple who said all the bollocks of whom would ever be responsible for a child who is born to parents who are different nationalities,
because of my own temporary physical illness that I got recently.
